Bacheldre Watermill Rustic Country Bread Flour 1 kg : White bread flour

White flour and under weight. I am fairly new to breadmaking (by hand). I bought this flour as the seeds and wholegrains appealed to me. It is lovely flour and i was really pleased with the bread. However, i agree with another reviewer who commented that bacheldre really should state on the packet that it is ‘white flour with oats, seeds and wholegrains’ like them, i also thought it was brown flour. I agree that the quality control is not good, as having read another review i weighed out the flour and it was nowhere near the 1kg stated on the bag.

I use this 50/50 with (usually) allinson country grain flou. It’s flour with a lot of smallish seeds in. Just personal preference really, i get bored with plain white or wholemeal, and like a slightly malty taste so i mix it with the allinsons or sometimes matthews cotswold crunch.

Very heavy flour, is better is mixed 50/50 with white. Here are the specifications for the Bacheldre Watermill Rustic Country Bread Flour 1 kg:

  • Stoneground UK wheat flour blended with oats, seeds and wholegrains including, millet seeds, sunflower seeds, malted rye flakes, toasted wheat flakes to make the perfect seeded loaf
  • Tasty and textured but not too heavy
  • Strong for bread making
  • No additives
  • Enough to make 12 x 500 g loaves

I have used this flour and it makes a lovely seeded loaf – light in texture (i use a bread machine). I mostly use their stoneground white bakers flour but also use their rye flour and overall think it is a great brand and reasonably priced. I make a loaf a day in the breadmaker so have road tested them well : ).

Wonderful taste, and works a treat in my bread machine. Makes a really tasty loaf with a great texture – and works perfectly in my bread machine with my regular recipe. I wondered at first if i’d need to adapt the recipe to use this flour – but then tried my normal ‘large white loaf’ recipe as this basically seems to be white bread flour with added seeds/oats etc. Well, it worked a treat – delicious bread, and at a great price.Have posted a photo of the flour and of my finished loaf – not to show my bread-making skills (which are probably sorely lacking) but to give some idea of the appearance of a finished loaf. (apologies for the big hole left my my bread machine paddle, but my family had eaten half of it before i had taken the photo) i will definitely buy this flour again.

Reviews from purchasers :

  • Nice flour, but extremely poor quality control
  • Tasty, seedy, soft and sliceable loaf
  • Fabulous and foolproof!

Nice flour and plenty of added seeds for texture and. Nice flour and plenty of added seeds for texture and taste. Have weighed all the bags and each contains well over 1kl so sufficient in each to make 2 x3lb loaves, there is a recipe printed on the bag for hand or machine baking which i might try at some time, but i prefer the traditional method of double proving, i think it makes for a better finished loaf.

Once you have used this company’s products for bread making, you will never want any other brand. Works wonderfully in bread machines, has a true mill-ground texture, and the flavour of loaves is scrummy.

  1. I make a great of bread and tend to buy the bachelor flour. They are all good so far as i can see. This one is good and the family all seem to like it. It all goes very quickly anyway.

I wouldn’t buy anything else as we never tire of the bread it makes – paired with a reliable breadmaker it can’t be beaten.

Love this flour when i’m feeling like something a bit seedy.
      1. I use this flour in a bread machine and have had good consistent results, a nice crust on the outside and soft crumb inside. I know it is subjective but i like the taste as it is supplied, however you can add other flour or seeds to tailor it to your liking.

    1. Tasty, seedy, soft and sliceable loaf. This is really, really good bread flour. I’ve used bacheldre malted grain flour and whole meal, both of which i like. But i think this rustic bread flour has the edge. It makes a loaf which is not only delicious, but also rises well, remains soft after a couple of days, and is remarkably easy to slicei use it in a panasonic breadmaker, on a white loaf setting, and add a couple of spoonfuls of ground sunflower / linseed to give an even nuttier taste and grainier texture.

    1. This is perfectly good flour, but i have to confess to being a little disappointed that it wasn’t more out of the ordinary. It’s sold as a seeded loaf, but the seeds are rather scarce and the texture of the loaf a little too light and fluffy for my tastes. I was really wanting to like this flour, but i think that waitrose’s own brand seeded flour is as good, and probably better.

A very good flour – but not whole meal. . A good flour traditionally milled by mill stones driven by water. I believe all the grains are sourced close to the mill. I wrongly presumed that this was a whole wheat flour but in fact it is seeded white which is not what i like to use. The flour is a very off white though so unbleached. Using a morphy richards bread maker this makes a good loaf but is soft and doughy and not to my taste as i normally use seeded whole wheat and a spelt flour – both from bacheldre watermill. As i had 8kg of this flour i make it more acceptable by mixing 30% rye flour with it. Bacheldre watermill is my preferred supplier of flours and unlike another review here i detest doves as it is too fine and powdery – probably from a modern mill with steel rollers and modern grains which are nowhere as good as those from a traditional mill.
